Demonstration Alert – Bamako, Mali – January 19, 2023

Near Mémorial Modibo Keita and the Monument de l’Indépendance

Due to celebrations for Malian Armed Forces Day on January 20, 2023, there will likely be an increase in pedestrian and vehicular traffic between Mémorial Modibo Keita and the Monument de l’Indépendance. While the embassy does not have information about planned events, consider exercising caution and limiting your movements over the holiday weekend.

Large gatherings and demonstrations sometimes turn confrontational and can escalate into violence, resulting in the burning of tires, clashes with the police, blockage on the roads and bridges, throwing of rocks at vehicles, the deployment of tear gas, and small arms fire.
