Demonstration Alert – Bamako, Mali (Planned Demonstrations on Friday and Sunday – 11/15/2019 and 11/17/2019)

 Location: Announced gathering points include, but are not limited to, the following places in Bamako, Mali:

  • Monument de L’Independence
  • Palais des Sports

 Events: There will be a demonstration organized by Malian opposition parties on Friday, November 15 at 2:00PM. The event is not yet authorized by the local government.  While the demonstration is expected to be peaceful, there will likely be a heavy impact on traffic in the area and the situation may become unstable.

  • Monument de L’Independence

Events: There will be a demonstration organized by civil society organizations on Sunday, November 17 at 10:00 a.m.  The event is authorized by the local government.  While the demonstration is expected to be peaceful, there will likely be a heavy impact on traffic in the area and the situation may become unstable.

  •  Palais des Sports

 U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the listed locations on the listed dates.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations
  • Continue to exercise vigilance while in Mali
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests
  • Review your personal security plans
  • Keep a low profile
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep some form of communication with you
  • Monitor local media for updates on locations and time of the demonstrations
