On the proud occasion of Malian Independence Day, I would like to wish the people of Mali a Happy Independence Day. The United States of America and Mali have a long tradition of friendship and cooperation, and as the new U.S. Ambassador to Mali, I am proud to continue that tradition. The United States of America recognized the Federation of Mali on June 20, 1960 in a congratulatory message from President Dwight D. Eisenhower to President Modibo Keita, then recognized the independent Republic of Mali on September 24, 1960 after the National Assembly of the Republic of Soudan legislated that it would become the Republic of Mali.
As a friend of the people and government of Mali, the U.S. will continue to support and encourage Malian citizens and officials as they work together on the important tasks of bringing peace, security, and prosperity to an independent and sovereign Mali – today, tomorrow and into the future.
Happy Malian Independence Day!
