U.S. Embassy Bamako, Mali
February 27, 2015
The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens of recurring planned demonstrations on Fridays starting at 3:30PM at the Independence Monument, beginning today, February 27.
Several civil society organizations, NGOs, and political parties are announcing a series of sit-ins to express discontent with the security situation in Northern Mali. Participants are being asked to gather every Friday at the Independence Monument/Boulevard (see map) starting at 3:30PM. It is unknown if the group will move from that location.
There is the potential for these demonstrations to attract large numbers of participants. While the U.S. Embassy does not expect these demonstrations to turn violent, there will likely be a heavy security presence and traffic diversions during the events. The Embassy has recommended that its staff avoid the area on Friday afternoons and evenings. Private U.S. citizens are advised to do the same.
Remember even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. If you find yourself near a demonstration, leave the area. If it is not safe to do so, maintain a low profile until you are able to relocate.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Mali despite the Travel Warning enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at travel.state.gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you do not have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Mali. For additional information, refer to the “Traveler’s Checklist” on the State Department’s website.
