Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration Planned in Bamako on April 20

April 19, 2017

The U.S. Embassy has learned that a demonstration is planned in Bamako on April 20 at 10:00 a.m.  While the demonstration is intended to be nonviolent, an increased security presence and traffic disruptions are possible.  We strongly urge U.S. citizens to avoid the area.  Demonstrators plan to start at the Bourse du Travail and walk to the Cite Administrative.

The U.S. Embassy reminds citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.  Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
