Statement from the U.S. Embassy

The United States Embassy in Bamako extends its condolences to the bereaved family and friends of those whose lives were lost in recent demonstrations. We wish those injured a swift and full recovery. We encourage all Malians to work constructively to respect fundamental human rights and preserve the rule of law. We call on Malian security forces to strictly avoid excessive force, abide by human rights principles, and hold accountable anyone who violates the rights of Malian citizens.

The United States urges all political leaders to send clear messages to their supporters to exercise utmost restraint and to refrain from any action likely to fuel tensions. We welcome the visit to Mali of the delegation of the Economic Community of West African States and express our support for the efforts of neighboring countries and the international community to promote inclusive dialogue and work toward resolution. We call on all stakeholders to commit to a rejection of any extra-constitutional changes of government. We reaffirm our steadfast dedication to continuing to support Malians in their efforts to consolidate peace and improve governance for all citizens.
