The United States Embassy in Mali strongly condemns the terrorist attacks on January 20 against the UN camp in Aguelhok that left ten Chadian peacekeepers dead and others wounded. Attacks against peacekeepers who are serving to support peace and stability in Mali will only strengthen our resolve to hold accountable those who commit such intolerable acts.
The United States offers its heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and wishes a speedy recovery to the wounded. We offer our deepest sympathies to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and the people and government of Chad, and we reaffirm our commitment to our friends in Mali and across the Sahel to restore peace and security.
We urge the Malian government and its international partners to cooperate to assure that this attack is investigated fully and the perpetrators are held accountable. The United States underscores the need to bring the assailants, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.
The United States also calls upon the Malian parties to swiftly implement the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali.
